SUMMARY:Creating Browser Extensions for Firefox and Chrome

DTEND;TZID=America/New_York;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20101006T200000
URL;VALUE=URI:http://mhvlug.org/content/creating-browser-extensions-firefox-and-chrome
LOCATION:103 Market St\nPoughkeepsie\, NY 12061
DESCRIPTION:Browser extensions offer a way for linux users to build and distribute u \n seful applications to a wide (cross platform) audience using open source t \n ools. Two browsers in particular lend themselves well to extension devel \n opment -- Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chromium.\nBecause of Mozilla's X \n PCOM system (Cross Platform Component Object Modeling -- similar to Micr \n osoft's COM system)\, Firefox essentially gives you access to the full ca \n pabilities of the host OS. Firefox itself it based on XPCOM and exposes t he \n entire Mozilla platform to extension developers. This is a powerful p latform \n for building user facing applications\, even those that are not w ebby.\nOn \n the other hand\, the extension API for Chromium is much less po werful\, but \n much easier to grok. It walls off developers from the OS\, so e xtensions \n almost have to be networked and webby. Nevertheless\, Google ha s made it so \n easy to build extensions for Chromium that it's hard to ign ore.\nWe'll go \n over the structure of the Mozilla Platform and XPCOM enou gh to learn how it \n works and get our bearings. Although we will not be d emonstrating the \n creation of an XPCOM component\, we'll review how it is d one in C++\, \n JavaScript\, and even Python. Then we'll go over the JavaScri pt API to XPCOM\, \n and briefly mention the binding for Python as well. Wi th a grasp on XPCOM \n we'll skip ahead a little bit and explore XUL\, Mozil la's XML user interface \n markup language.\nWith XPCOM and XUL under our b elts we'll stitch together a \n note taking application with JavaScript. I f all goes well we'll move into \n the much simpler JavaScript interface fo r Chromium. There are a few basic \n concepts to understand first\, like the w alled sandboxes\, but after that it's \n a simple matter of finding our way a round the JavaScript API. Given some \n time\, we'll build the same note tak ing application on the Chromium platform \n as well.\nLightning Talks\n\nAd d some
